Meditation / Yoga

For the more serious student of inner spiritual exploration, a specific discipline or practice such as meditation and/or yoga is one place where they can turn. They seek more direct spiritual experience, beyond traditional religious faith or the more non-traditional world of occult phenomena. These esoteric searchers hunger to quench their souls and spirits in a way the physical world cannot readily accommodate. This search may eventually lead them to the higher end, most advanced systems of meditation, more commonly referred to as surat shabd yoga or nada yoga. These are meditation systems which tie the aspirant into the inner sonic force that is the very creative force that drives the universe; to the audible life stream that connects us all, the actual sonic umbilical chord of the cosmos.

Advanced Sound Current Meditation

Very basically, the true essence of your being lives on an electrical type of spiritual energy. This spiritual energy drives your consciousness and provides the energy to hold your genetic structure in balance. The energy is supplied to you through an umbilical cord arrangement, and the ringing or buzzing sound we all hear is the current flow in that power line. Your hair swirl is evidence of its path. Real spiritual growth and development involves learning how to control the energy flow in your own being. That energy flow is the “gasoline” which supports the life velocity of your being. When you have learned how to keep from running out of gas, you are free to explore the great universe of universes as a free being in your own right. This means you will have a cosmic “driver’s license”, unlimited energy and all the time you need.

The Application of Yoga Meditation Techniques

Focus your full, undivided attention in the center of your brain where the pineal gland is located. Listen with your attention for whatever sounds present themselves. After awhile, you will hear sounds of various tones and pitches. At first, you may only hear the low hiss of random molecular noise in the ears, but in time, definite tones will present themselves like sustained notes on an organ. This sound is perceived directly by the brain and the subtle bodies themselves, and not through the outer physical organs of the ears. It is the sound of the vibration of conscious energy as it flows through the physical body and as it vibrates and circulates within the subtle bodies.

The Crown of Life

It is in the context of this problem that Surat Shabd Yoga, or the yoga of the celestial Sound Current, assumes its unique importance. Those who have mastered this yoga teach that the Absolute, though free of attributes in Its primal state, projects itself into form and assumes two primary attributes: Light and Sound. It is no mere accident, they point out, that in the revelatory literature of all major religions there are frequent references to the “Word” which occupies a central position in their pattern.

Naam or Word – Introductory

NAAM is easier said than known and practiced. It is only an adept in the mysteries of Naam who knows its true significance and the great power that lies hidden in it. Apparently it is just a syllable, but what it connotes is beyond understanding even by the most learned in book knowledge; though it may be possible to apprehend it through the grace of one well versed not only in the theory but in the practice as well of the Word.

Naam or Word – Shabd The Sound Principle

Whatever is spoken or heard is Shabd, and it reveals the real nature of things and explains the hidden reality or mystery thereof. But in the terminology of the saints, the term “Shabd” has a much deeper significance, quite different from its commonly accepted meaning. Everything from beginning to end exists in Shabd. The physical elements, the subtle and ethereal powers and vibrations, the causal seeds and essences, one and all are from Shabd and nothing but Shabd personified. We live and have our very being in Shabd and ultimately dissolve into Shabd. All the scriptures of the world tell us that Shabd is above the material and efficient cause and All-Controlling Power of the Universe.

Soundless Sound – The Tone that fills the Cosmos

Those precious beings who have mastered this form of yoga profess that the universal Soul manifests Itself into two primary elements, a lightless Light and a soundless Sound. Although these two spiritual elements mirror the relationship between mundane light and sound, in so far as light is sound of a very high vibrational frequency, they are not equivalent. Because the Light and Sound are part of the universal vibratory continuum, if one is able to contact the Sound Current then one is surely on the road to the Light that all the great past Masters spoke of.

The Sound of Silence

As you calm down you can experience the sound of silence in the mind. You hear it as a kind of high frequency sound, a ringing sound that’s always there. It is just normally never noticed. Now when you begin to hear that sound of silence, it’s a sign of emptiness – of silence of the mind. It’s something you can always turn to. As you concentrate on it and turn to it, it can make you quite peaceful, blissful. Meditating on that, you have a way of letting the conditions of the mind cease without just suppressing them with another condition. Otherwise you just end up putting one condition over another.

Vipassana Meditation: The Soothing Divinity of Sound

The Himalayan masters of ancient India developed the “sound current” that is now known as the “divine sound.” The divine sound is the foundation used for practicing various forms of yoga—nada, sahaj, Babaji, kriya, and Sikh practices such as shabda yoga. The sound current used in meditation is similar to electrical current in everyday life. When electricity runs through a power line, it creates a humming sound. Just like electricity, when spiritual energy runs through the human body, we can hear within our heads the two energy fields interconnecting—the energy of the body’s physical circuitry and the current of spiritual energy.

The Universal Life Stream, the Song of the Universe

What is relatively new to the Western World is the concept of the “Audible Life Stream”, The Living Word of God. In this concept, we are all part of a ‘collective consciousness’ and the ‘body of God’, with the Word being our ‘direct line’ to the Supreme Being, the Universal Consciousness. The Living Word of God can be explained like that of electromagnetic radio waves that fill all space of the cosmic universe. These waves are being transmitted to us. All we need to do is learn how to tune our receiver into them. The East calls this cosmic sound, “Bani”, the music of God. It has been said that once you are able to tune yourself into Bani and hear it, you will be filled with a great joy that is beyond compare. Bani is what the West refers to as the ‘Music of the Angels’.
